St. Ambrose

Church of St. Rupert, Weißpriach, Austria

The mitre, crozier, and cope signify St. Ambrose's role as a bishop. Behind him on the left is a beehive, one of his attributes. Unlike most portraits, this one does not include a book.

There is no consistency with respect to a beard in images of St. Ambrose. Here he has a long, gray beard. In other images it may be shorter and darker, and in still others he may be without a beard at all.
